Merlin Industries International Ltd provided a marine band antenna for ship to shore communications.

The client required a reliable system for ship to shore communications.  The existing use of hand-held marine band radios from within the owners Click for larger imagehouse was providing unreliable for communications with a small vessel fishing in-shore waters.  The solution was an external broad band marine antenna of 12dBi gain, mounted as high as possible on the outside of the house.  The main obstacle was the hostile weather conditions where wind speeds of above 110mph were not uncommon.  The antenna was mounted away from the prevailing wind on a galvanised steel bracket using stainless steel fittings.  All connections were waterproofed using butyl rubber tape.  An additional layer of cold-galvanising paint was added to the finished installation to give maximum protection against salt laden spray.  An RG58/U feeder cable was clipped  and run to the inside of the house and terminated in an N-type connector at a purpose build “docking” station, allowing the existing hand-held marine radios to be used within the house.  Testing of the system yielded a dramatic improvement and clear communications were possible at all required locations of the fishing vessel.
